Dr. Stephen Genuis![]() BiographyDr. Stephen Genuis is a clinician and researcher involved in many areas of medical science. He is board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as in Environmental Medicine and has authored over 80 scientific publications for peer-review medical journals including Lancet, British Medical Journal, Canadian Medical Association Journal, Public Health, and Environmental Research. In addition to writing, he lectures extensively and reviews papers for many scientific journals on issues ranging from medical ethics to environmental health, from evidence-based medicine to nutritional science, and from physician professionalism to medicine and cyberspace. He has served as the women's health care physician for an inner city clinic, worked as an Obstetrician/Gynecologist at a University teaching hospital, and served as co-director of medical services in a West African hospital. Included in his awards are the Commemorative Medal from the Governor General in recognition of significant contribution to Canada, the 1983 'Resident of the Year' award chosen by the graduating medical class at the University of Alberta medical school, and a 'Teacher of the Year' award from the University of Alberta – where he serves as a Clinical Professor in the Faculty of Medicine. He plays piano and sings in a doctor's band called DixieDocs. Most importantly, he is Shelagh's husband and his five kids' "Pa". Dr. Edward Giovannucci![]() BiographyDr. Giovannucci is a Professor in the Departments of Nutrition and Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, and an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School/Brigham and Women's Hospital. He received a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1984, and did his residency in anatomic pathology at the University of Connecticut. He received a doctoral degree in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health in 1992. His research focuses on how nutritional, environmental and lifestyle factors relate to various malignancies, especially those of the prostate and colorectum. A specific area of interest is the etiologic mechanisms underlying the relation between these modifiable factors and cancer risk. His work has included the study of how nutrition and other lifestyle factors impact on cancer risk by influencing levels of insulin, insulin-like growth factors, vitamin D metabolites, and steroid hormones. Another area of interest is how nutrients may interact with genetic susceptibilities in determining an individual's risk. Recent publications include investigations of the role of vitamin D levels in myocardial infarction and in the survival of patients with colorectal cancer. Dr. Ron Hunninghake![]() BiographyDr Hunninghake is the Chief Medical Officer of the Olive White Garvey Center for Healing Arts, the clinical division of Riordan Clinic. A 1976 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine. Dr. Hunninghake trained alongside Dr. Hugh D. Riordan for 17 years, and presents lectures in Canada, Japan, across the country, and onsite at the Riordan Clinic on IVC and Cancer. Dr. Stuart Wilkinson![]() BiographyDr. Stuart Wilkinson has always recognized the role preventative medicine played in helping his patients become more responsible for their overall health and well being. To that end Stuart worked with naturopathic doctors, nutritionists and acupuncturists while at the Integrative Medicine Institute in Calgary which provided him with a fertile environment to expand his knowledge and experience within integrative and preventative medicine. He is one of only two doctors in Canada certified as a DAN (Defeat Autism Now) practitioner. His expertise as a DAN practitioner has allowed Dr. Wilkinson to grow his practice to the point where it is now accepted by the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons to provide chelation therapy in children. He is part of an expert panel on Vitamin D for the College and currently serves as the medical director of the Pure North S'Energy Foundation. In this capacity Dr. Wilkinson is expanding the Foundation's mandate to discover and promote the latest innovations in integrative health diagnostics and therapeutics. Dr. Wilkinson believes that patients are best at diagnosing what ails them with the support of an attending physician who is able to listen carefully. His compassion and love of his profession continue to drive his efforts to advance preventative and integrative health care in Alberta. Dr. Paul Veugelers![]() BiographyDr. Paul Veugelers, a professor at the University of Alberta's School of Public Health, is among a small minority of researchers whose work focuses on primary prevention of overweight and subsequent chronic diseases. The overarching objective of his research is to advise on and direct new health policies and intervention programs to prevent chronic diseases and improve quality of life. Dr. Veugelers' flagship project is the Alberta Program Promoting active Living & healthy Eating in Schools (APPLE Schools) which is funded by Allan Markin. In each of the 60 APPLE Schools the aim is to change the school environment such that the healthy choice becomes the easy choice for students. One school health facilitator is assigned to each APPLE School to work with the entire school community—parents, students, staff, and community members—to identify current policies and programs that support healthy eating and active living choices for students. Three years into the program, students in APPLE Schools eat healthier, are more active and have healthier body weights. Students are educated on how to carry healthy lifestyles into adulthood. Dr. Veugelers received training in human nutrition (MSc), epidemiology (PhD) and biostatistics (postdoctoral fellowship). He received a Canada Institutes for Health Research New Investigator Award and currently holds a Canada Research Chair in Population Health and an Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions Health Scholar Award in support of his academic research program. His research findings are captured in more than a hundred scientific publications. He is the director of the Population Health Intervention Research Unit that employs more than 30 researchers and staff and host various school health projects including APPLE Schools (APPLESchools.ca), REAL Kids Alberta (REALKidsAlberta.ca), and CLASS (NSCLASS.ca). Dr. Ludovic Brunel![]() BiographyDr. Brunel is a naturopathic physician trained at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. Prior to his training as a doctor, he studied human nutrition at McGill University in Montreal. Dr. Brunel has spent the last 7 years formulating dietary supplements, preparing literature, educating the public and other health professional on the safe and effective use of natural therapies. Dr. Peter Faris![]() BiographyPeter has been involved with research for 27 years and he brings extensive statistical expertise to Pure North. He has a master's degree in psychology, and a PhD in biostatistics. For the past 12 years, has worked as a biostatistician providing support for research at the Univeristiy of Calgary, in the Calgary Health Region and Alberta Health Services. He has provided statistical consultation and analysis for dozens of research projects in cardiology, psychology, orthopedics, infection control, and cancer. Dr. Larry Ohlhauser![]() BiographyDr. Ohlhauser is a force to be reckoned with. He has piloted jet airplanes, thwarted an impending heart attack and spoken publicly to thousands, on how to avoid ending up in the morgue early. Add a best selling book, "The Healthy CEO" and you have a man who infuses life with energy, purpose, and passion. Dr. Ohlhauser was named one of the top 100 Physicians of the century by the College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Alberta Medical Association. He received the Alberta Centennial Medal in recognition of outstanding service to the people and province of Alberta. He was named the top Canadian TEC speaker for 2007 and 2010. As the President and CEO of Ohlhauser & Associates, Dr. Ohlhauser consults in healthcare strategy and management for large multinational corporations and government institutions. He urges everyone to "Be the CEO of their health" and shows people how to slow down and recognize the importance of the physical, relational, and financial wellness in their lives. What should I expect when I am in the program?Assessment AppointmentYour initial visit with our team has been designed to evaluate your current health status and your potential health risks. Biometric measurements such as your height, weight, waist girth and blood pressure will be taken. A lifestyle questionnaire must also be completed. We also perform extensive blood tests and urine tests to measure your nutrient levels and possible markers for disease using the most advanced and informative measurements and screening tests available. We inquire about your dental history and recommend the safe removal of mercury amalgam fillings to encourage a healthy mouth and therefore a healthy body and immune system.
